Each of the 81,200-dwt dry bulk vessels will be fitted with dual-fuel engines that can run on both methanol and conventional fuel oil.

“When powered by green methanol the vessels can produce close to zero GHG emissions based on the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology well-to-propeller (WTP),” Safe Bulkers claims.

LCA is a method to assess potential environmental impacts throughout a product's life cycle. WTP tracks exhaust emissions emitted over the operational profile of the vessel by covering all stages of fuel production and usage from feedstock recovery (wells) to vessel propellers.

Safe Bulkers has not disclosed the name of the shipbuilder that will build these vessels.

The company expects the first vessel to be delivered in fourth quarter of 2026, followed by the second one in the first quarter of 2027.
