The classification society, DNV, awarded the Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate for the vessel designs on Wednesday, according to a LinkedIn post by Toepfer. The vessels are the result of a collaboration between SDARI, DNV and Toepfer.

The two vessels — OCTOPUS 12.6 and OCTOPUS 12 — weigh 12,600 mt and 12,000 mt, respectively. The vessels can be equipped with two-stroke or four-stroke engines capable of running on methanol.

There are now 269 confirmed methanol-capable vessels in operation (33) and on order for delivery towards 2028 (236), according to AFI database
