The 15,000-TEU containership, ZIM Mount Rainier, can run on both LNG and conventional marine fuels. It will be chartered out to Israeli cargo shipping company ZIM for a period of 12 years.

The series of 10 LNG vessels were ordered by Seaspan in 2021, with the first vessel in the series, ZIM Sammy Ofer, taking its maiden voyage in April this year.

LNG has been gaining popularity among shipowners. The global LNG-fuelled fleet comprises 420 vessels, with another 123 expected to join this year, classification society DNV data shows.

LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a greenhouse gas (GHG) compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
