Shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has signed an annual contract with Canadian LNG supplier Seaspan Energy to bunker its LNG-capable car carriers at the Port of Vancouver.

The first LNG bunker operation under the contract was carried out on 29 April, MOL said.

In March last year, MOL carried out an LNG bunker operation on a car carrier in Vancouver. That was the first ever LNG refueling operation on the west coast of North America by a Japanese shipping company.

It has since conducted several additional operations there. The new annual contract is designed to secure MOL more stable and predictable fuel supply as it takes delivery of new LNG-capable car carriers on the route.

MOL's marine fuel division general manager Daisuke Fujihashi said the company plans to continue its clean fuels collaboration with Seaspan Energy, possibly including liquefied biomethane (LBM) supply in the future.
