Shell imports first mass-balanced LBM into Singapore
Global energy firm Shell has imported mass-balanced liquefied biomethane (LBM) into Singapore through its local subsidiary, Shell Singapore.

“The ISCC EU-certified biomethane was sourced from the USA and mass-balanced via the pipeline to a liquefaction plant, into a conventional LNG cargo supplied by Shell for delivery to Singapore,” Shell explained.
The mass-balancing approach allows Shell to use existing LNG infrastructure to bring certified LBM into Singapore, without having to build dedicated facilities.
Shell Singapore, formerly Shell Eastern, is one of the companies licensed to supply LNG as a marine fuel in Singapore.
The imported cargo will be stored at Singapore LNG's (SLNG) terminal. Shell said the delivery followed the arrival of its chartered LNG bunker vessel Macoma at the terminal.
SLNG recently secured International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) certification to handle LBM at its terminal.
The certification allows customers to trace and account for green methane molecules allocated to LNG supplies from the facility through mass balancing. It covers storage, regasification, bunkering and trucking operations.
The operation shows the “practical feasibility of bringing certified renewable gas into Singapore through existing LNG infrastructure, covering sourcing, certification, transportation, discharge and storage,” Shell added.
