Singapore bio-bunker sales fell in May and LNG rose

June 17, 2024

Singapore sold around 1,700 mt/day of bio-bunkers in May, significantly down from around 2,000 mt/day in April, according to preliminary figures from the port authority.

Changes in Singapore alternative fuel sales between April and May:

  • Bio-VLSFO sales down from 60,000 mt to 48,000 mt
  • Bio-HSFO sales up from nil to 5,000 mt
  • Bio-MDO sales up from nil to 300 mt
  • LNG sales up from 36,000 mt to 49,000 mt
  • Methanol sales up from nil to 1,600 mt

Singapore's bio-blended bunker sales declined for the second consecutive month in May. Bio-bunker sales are much lower than peak sales of 79,000 mt recorded last October.

Most of the 54,000 bio-blended bunkers sold in May were VLSFO blended with a bio component—typically 24% in Singapore. Total biofuel bunker sales across the first five months of this year stood at 241,000 mt, significantly higher than around 159,000 mt sold in the same period last year.

On the other hand, LNG sales rose by a significant 37% in May, reaching record levels of around 49,000 mt. Total LNG bunker sales stood at 160,000 mt in the first five months, up from 19,000 mt sold in the same period last year.

Methanol made its first appearance in the sales data since last July, with around 1,600 mt sold during the month.
