The Maritime Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) have invited market participants to submit proposals or so-called Expression of Interest (that are non-binding) to build, own and operate ammonia bunkering and power generation infrastructure on Jurong Island.
Market participants with successful bids will be responsible for buying, importing, storing and distributing ammonia, or hydrogen derived from ammonia, according to a statement released by the MPA and EMA.
They assert that ammonia is currently the only hydrogen carrier with a built-out supply chain and more advanced technology. The pair anticipates that ammonia supply for power generation and ammonia bunkering on Jurong Island could begin by 2027.
Ammonia storage and jetty facilities should be designed and constructed in a way to handle at least 100,000 mt/year of ammonia, MPA and EMA said.
The recent announcement of the project is in line with Singapore's National Hydrogen Strategy, which aims to encourage development of hydrogen projects across Singapore. The country has set an ambitious target of having net zero emissions by 2050.
