March 27, 2026

A few ports in Western Australia have resumed operations, including bunkering, after Tropical Cyclone Narelle moved on from the region. But the majority of ports remain shut.

The cyclone is currently over land south of Coral Bay and moving south-southeast, with severe weather still affecting the northern Gascoyne and far western Pilbara coasts. It is expected to weaken over land by Saturday, according to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology.

The Port of Broome reopened on Thursday (26 March), resuming normal operations with caution. Full operations have also restarted at Port Hedland, where recovery efforts are underway.

The majority of ports - including Port Walcott, Onslow, Barrow Island, Cape Preston, Cape Cuvier (Carnarvon), Dampier, Varanus Island and Ashburton - remain shut, according to GAC Hot Port News.

The weather system appears “to have passed Dampier and now impacting Onslow,” although “strong winds still reported in Dampier,” a local source said.
