Svitzer places order for battery-powered tug

Istanbul-based Sanmar Shipyard will deliver the new battery-powered tug to the Danish towage and marine services provider Svitzer in the second half of 2025.

The new tug will be added to Svitzer’s existing capacity in the Øresund Strait. 

The tug is equipped with an 1,818-kWh battery system, allowing it to operate solely on electric power.

Battery power can help reduce emissions from smaller ships and boats, but it has not yet achieved the technological breakthrough to power larger oceangoing vessels.
