China Shipping & Sinopec Suppliers Company bunkered the vessel, MV Cape XL, with 1,000 mt of B24 biofuel blend at its ballast port in Guangzhou, China on 15 March.
The B24 blend contained 24% biofuel derived from used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME) and 76% VLSFO.
The vessel was loaded with 148,500 mt of coal, according to Tata Steel. It loaded in Gladstone port on 19 April and docked at Kalinga International Coal Terminal in Paradip on 8 May.
“Carbon emission for this laden leg voyage was approximately 565 tons [565 mt] less, which is ~20% less as compared to a traditional cape vessel using VLSFO,” Tata Steel claimed.
