Technology and regulatory framework required to push ammonia usage – MTM Forum
The Maritime Technologies Forum (MTM) argues that ammonia has potential to replace conventional fuels, but that a lack of technological readiness and a regulatory framework is holding back its roll out.

MTM is a forum consisting of flag states and classification society members that provide technical and regulatory expertise to the maritime sector.
MTM says that the market is aware of ammonia's characteristics having a toxic, highly flammable and corrosive nature. Ammonia differs from other conventional and alternative fuels in this regard, so a regulatory framework specific to ammonia is required for its safe usage in vessels.
The forum calls for more studies on ammonia's supply chain network and greenhouse gas emissions during production.
MTM is working with its members to develop an international safety regulatory framework for the usage of ammonia in vessels and has urged members to discuss ideas and views.
Japan and several other countries have submitted proposals to the International Maritime Organisation, urging development of "non-mandatory" guidelines for safe usage of ammonia.
The IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) met last week and decided to develop these safety guidelines. A draft is expected next year.
