This vessel, with a catamaran layout, is projected to utilise a hydrogen-powered "multi-megawatt fuel cell" and target a speed of 35 knots, covering a range of 160 miles while accommodating 275 passengers.
With the Norwegian Maritime Authority's green light, the companies are now planning to focus on securing funding to construct and demonstrate a hydrogen-powered ferry.
“This vessel can become an accelerator for emission-free marine passenger transport,” chief executive of TECO 2030 Group Tore Enger says.
This project could serve as a model for similar-sized vessels seeking alternatives to traditional engines and fuels, Enger says.
