The trials were conducted on the d’Amico LR1 tanker vessel M/T Cielo di Rotterdam between June and July last year.

Initial results showed a 4.3% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions per mt of fuel, and achieved confirmation from class and flag states that the biofuel blend will comply with Tier II nitrogen oxide emissions regulations.

Biofuel blends are hybrid low carbon fuels that can help decarbonise shipping towards 2050 if the fuels are widely available and with the right regulatory incentives in place, says d’Amico deputy director Cesare D’Api.

The Rome-headquartered shipping firm also intends to test B40 and B50 blends with higher biofuel components this year.
