The IMO’s Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships has submitted a report to the Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) calling for inclusion of the UAE's proposal in the final text of the revised MARPOL Annex VI.
The UAE has put forward paragraphs that specify that the NZF should serve as the “only global mid-term measure for international shipping” once it is implemented.
The IMO working group has agreed to put forward the UAE's text to the MEPC.
The added text could clarify that this recognition is intended to avoid “a possible patchwork of duplicative State or regional measures”, potentially referencing the divergence between the EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) and FuelEU Maritime regulations and the IMO’s approved NZF.
Last week, the European Commission said that it would review its regional shipping regulations if the IMO’s framework is adopted.
