UK's Ricardo to design hydrogen power systems for ships

British environmental consultancy Ricardo will design and test a 375-kW hydrogen fuel cell module for passenger ships.

It will thereafter design an integrated 40-foot containerised fuel cell power system that will combine the outputs of several fuel cell modules.

The power containers will be installed on so-called zero emission cruise ships for primary propulsion.

For this project, the London-listed engineering firm is working with a group of 13 companies who call themselves the Sustainable Hydrogen Powered Shipping (sHYpS) consortium.
