“Shore power will end the outdated practice of ships keeping their engines running while anchored in port, reducing the poisonous fumes entering the air and ensuring we meet our net zero 2050 goals,” the UK's Maritime Minister Robert Courts says.

The government has not set a timeline for when it will roll out shore power in various ports. It calls on more evidence on the environmental and economic benefits from plugging in vessels at berth, and how to overcome barriers to setting it up.

The country has also pledged £23 million ($31 million) towards a clean maritime demonstration competition that will fund over 55 decarbonisation projects.
