US rig count drops for third straight week

The number of rigs drilling for crude oil and natural gas in the US fell by one to 620 units last week, according to Baker Hughes.

The number of crude oil rigs in operation rose by two units to 508. The US' total gas rig count dropped by two to 110 - the lowest since January 2022. There were also two miscellaneous rigs in operation – one less than in the week prior.

The total oil and gas rig count in the Permian Basin in Texas - the biggest US oil field – rose by one unit to 317.

The total US oil and gas rig count was down by 131, or 17%, from a year earlier.
