The number of oil rigs grew by five to 505 last week, reflecting the addition of three units in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico – the biggest American oilfield.

The US natural gas rig count fell by one unit to 116 last week. There were also four miscellaneous rigs in operation, one less than the prior week.

The total US oil and gas rig count was down by 159 units, or 20% from a year earlier.
