Blåvinge project collaboration includes Norwegian offshore wind developer Fred. Olsen Seawind, energy company Hafslund and Danish multinational wind energy giant Ørsted. The project aims to develop offshore wind sector in Norway.

Partnering companies have initiated a pilot under the Green Shipping Program (GSP) to analyse the use of green ammonia in offshore installation vessels. Backed by the Norwegian government, GSP is a public-private partnership that focuses on works related to green shipping.

Under the pilot, the quad along with other partners will explore the feasibility of using green ammonia to power vessels used for the installation and maintenance of floating offshore wind turbines along with anchor handling vessels.

“If we are successful with the project, it means that the installation of offshore wind turbines can be done with significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions than is possible today,” said Erlend Gjelstad, a member of the Blåvinge project.

“Although the work is in an early phase, the participants have ambitions for the project to enable the use of green ammonia for anchor handling ships in the installation and operational phase of Blåvinge’s floating offshore wind project at Utsira Nord,” VARD said.
