Vega Reederei orders 10 diesel-electric coaster vessels

German shipping company Vega Reederei has ordered 10 diesel-electric coaster vessels from China.

Coaster vessels are shallow-hulled cargo ships that are mainly used in and around coastal areas and are perfectly suitable for short-sea voyages.

The 3,800-dwt vessels will be equipped with “electro motors in combination with diesel generator sets” for propulsion. The vessel design also has the provision of installing a wind-assisted ship propulsion system.

The vessels have been designed by Dutch naval architect Conoship International and will be built by a company of the Chinese conglomerate Sinomach Group.

The coaster vessels can “also be easily upgraded to full-electric by replacing three main engines with green power sources like hydrogen cells,” Conoship International claims.

All vessels are expected to be delivered between August 2024 to May 2025.
