Wallenius adds wind power to dual-fuel vessel
Swedish shipping firm Wallenius Lines has ordered a wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS) retrofit for its LNG-capable dual-fuel vehicle carrier.

Swedish technology firm Oceanbird will install wing sails on the Wallenius Lines-owned vessel Way Forward.
The vessel is managed by Wallenius Marine, the ship management arm of Wallenius Lines, and chartered to the Volkswagen Group under a long-term agreement.
A wing sail is a rigid, airplane wing-like structure that harnesses wind to generate additional thrust and help propel the vessel.
The installation is scheduled for 2027 and is expected to improve the vessel’s energy efficiency, Wallenius Marine said.
“We are convinced that wind propulsion will play an important role in the future of shipping,” Johan Mattsson, chief executive of Wallenius Marine, said.
“The installation will provide valuable insights into how wind propulsion can be integrated into future vessel designs and day-to-day operations. The lessons learned will support the development of even more energy-efficient ships,” Mattsson added.
“By testing wing sails, we are contributing to the development of more sustainable vehicle logistics,” Peter Hörndlein, head of vehicle logistics overseas at Volkswagen Konzernlogistik, said.
