Yinson GreenTech and Langkawi Port to collaborate on fully electric ferry project
Singapore-based green technology company Yinson GreenTech’s (YGT) marine electrification arm, marinEV, has partnered with Malaysia’s Langkawi Port to develop the country’s first commercial fully electric passenger ferry service for open-water operations.

The Langkawi Electric Ferry Project aims to deploy purpose-built electric ferries on the route between Kuah, Langkawi and Kuala Perlis, supported by shore-based charging infrastructure.
Under the agreement, YGT will provide the ferries on a charter basis, while Langkawi Port will operate the service. Malaysian utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will develop the required electricity supply and charging infrastructure.
The vessels will use marinEV’s electric passenger-transport technology, combining electric propulsion, onboard energy storage and marinEV’s digital systems. They will also feature remote-operation capabilities developed by Norwegian marine technology company Zeabuz.
The project is intended to strengthen existing ferry connectivity between Langkawi and mainland Malaysia while demonstrating the practical integration of fully electric vessels and shore-based charging into regular passenger transport operations.
