ABS approves offshore LCO2 storage and injection unit

September 11, 2025

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has granted approval to a liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) floating storage and injection unit (FSIU) developed by offshore platform supplier MODEC in partnership with shipping company Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL).

Designed to operate directly at offshore injection sites, the unit receives low-pressure LCO2 from transport carriers, compresses it into high-pressure storage, and then injects it into subsea wells for permanent storage. By moving this process offshore, the FSIU reduces dependence on land-based infrastructure and allows flexible deployment across multiple sites.

The unit is capable of injecting up to 10 million mt of CO2 per year and has a minimum tank capacity of 100,000 cbm. To limit its own emissions, it uses diesel generators integrated with onboard carbon capture technology.

Positioned as a key link in the global carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) chain, the FSIU offers a scalable solution that eliminates the need for onshore storage and injection facilities.
