ABS nod for South Korean design of small-scale ammonia-fuelled container ship

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has granted approval in principle for the concept design of a 3,600-TEU ammonia-fuelled container ship developed by maritime engineering company Korea Maritime Consultants (KOMAC).

Ammonia offers “significant potential” to contribute to shipping’s emissions reduction, said Panos Koutsourakis, ABS vice president of Global Sustainability.

Besides, KOMAC predicts "an increase in the demand for small-scale, ammonia-fueled vessels" to which this prototype might be a solution.
