AIDA cruise ship trials shore power in Stockholm

The port authority is installing two shore power units for cruise ships at Stadsgården cruise terminal in Stockholm. It expects around 35 cruise ships to connect to the grid at this terminal during the trial period, which will run until October.

Larger ships like cruise ships and container ships need power for many different onboard operations and equipment while docked in port. These operations can be powered by connecting to shore power, without relying on the ship's own power supply.

Shore power supply can help to reduce a vessel's overall fuel consumption and lower its well-to-wake emissions in the near-term, even if it does not have a dramatic impact on the global shipping emissions. Connecting to shore power can also reduce air and noise pollution, the Port of Stockholm added.

“When the project is completed, it will be possible for over 45 percent of cruise calls at Ports of Stockholm to connect to electricity at the quay,” the port authority said.
