Under the project, Air Liquide plans to develop and operate a large-scale ammonia cracking plant and a hydrogen liquefier in a first-of-its-kind project in Europe.

By using ammonia as a feedstock, the facility will produce low-carbon hydrogen by replacing natural gas as the primary feedstock in one of Air Liquide’s hydrogen production units at the port.

The facility, which will include a hydrogen liquefier, aims to support the hydrogen supply chain in Europe and help decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors such as maritime transport.

“The combination of ammonia cracking and hydrogen liquefaction technologies offers an additional solution to support the growth of the global hydrogen market,” said Armelle Levieux, a member of Air Liquide’s executive committee.

The project is funded by the EC’s European Innovation Fund, which supports low-carbon technologies.
