Amogy completes trial of its ammonia-fuelled tugboat

September 24, 2024

The US-based ammonia tech firm Amogy announced that its tugboat sailed successfully on a tributary of the Hudson River, upstream from New York.

The tugboat, NH3 Kraken, originally built in 1957, has been retrofitted with Amogy’s ammonia-to-electric power system.

For the trial, the vessel was fuelled by green ammonia produced from renewable energy. Amogy has not specified where the green ammonia was sourced from or how much quantity was bunkered.

Amogy has developed an ammonia cracking technology, where a power system uses ammonia to generate hydrogen onboard. This system moves liquid ammonia stored onboard a vessel to a catalyst-based reactor. Ammonia is then broken down into its base elements – nitrogen and hydrogen – in a process termed “ammonia cracking”. Hydrogen generated through this process is used to power the fuel cell system and propel the vessel.
