A rotor sail is a modernised form of a Flettner rotor based on the Magnus effect, which creates air pressure to cause spinning. This technology allows a ship's main engine to reduce power during favourable wind conditions, cutting fuel consumption while maintaining operational speed.
“The vessel is projected to achieve annual fuel and emissions reductions of approximately 10–12% on average [by using this technology],” Anemoi noted.
The vessel Grand Pioneer piloted the rotor sail technology on a voyage from Zhoushan to Singapore with the units fully deployed.
It will now return to deep-sea service between Brazil and China under a long-term charter with Brazilian miner Vale.
