Other partners to the project include the Dutch Port of Amsterdam, the Belgian Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Dutch logistics major Samskip and energy giants Shell and Linde Gas.
The project partners aim to start using pay-per-use fuel cells for ships along the Rhine Corridor by 2025. The hydrogen needed for the fuel cells will be delivered to the vessels in tank containers for easier loading and unloading.
Nico van Dooren, Port of Rotterdam’s director of new business says, “By offering a modular, scalable and affordable solution, Condor H2 [initiative] will make it technically and economically feasible to switch to zero-emission shipping on the key shipping routes in north-west Europe.”
The alliance aims to deploy at least 50 emission-free vessels by 2030, which it claims will reduce around 100,000 mt/year of carbon dioxide emissions.
