Green ammonia is produced using green hydrogen as a feedstock and renewable electricity as an energy source.
This project aims to “leverage Brazil’s vast renewable energy resources” to produce green ammonia for the shipping industry, among other sectors, according to Sempen.
The plant will be located within the Port of Açu industrial complex, a deep-water port on the South Atlantic Ocean in Rio de Janeiro.
A final investment decision (FID) is expected between 2027 and 2028, with operations expected to begin by 2030.
The port authority highlighted the advantages of the location, suggesting that the maritime industry can benefit from its “deep draft, available area with direct access to the quay and a cluster of services that brings together multiple port and maritime support providers.”
