French ferry operator Brittany Ferries has named its upcoming ferry as Guillaume de Normandie. The vessel, which will be delivered by May 2025, can run on LNG, electricity or in a hybrid mode, it said.
The vessel will switch to electric or hybrid mode during port calls. Brittany Ferries says the ferry can connect to shore power systems, thereby being able to charge the batteries at ports.
The company expects shore power facility to be available in the port of Caen by 2027. Meanwhile, Portsmouth aims to complete shore power system installation over the next two years.
Guillaume de Normandie will eventually replace Normandie, a conventional-powered ferry currently operating between Portsmouth and the port of Caen.
