Chevron Shipping Company is the subsidiary of New York-listed oil and gas major Chevron. Green Ships is the energy transition division of the Greek shipping company Angelicoussis Group.
The study will also assess ammonia supply chain aspects including infrastructure, safety aspects, new vessel requirements, and transport routes between the US Gulf Coast and Europe, according to the joint announcement.
Eventually, the companies will look into transporting ammonia to other countries as well.
The companies have not yet specified whether the ammonia carriers will be powered by ammonia.
Ammonia can be used as a “hydrogen vector” and is a viable alternative fuel to decarbonise shipping, says Stelios Troulis, director at the Angelicoussis Group. And the study will identify the “technical, operational, and commercial challenges” of transporting and using ammonia in large quantities, he adds.
The study will help to accelerate marine transportation of ammonia and use "lower carbon energy at scale”, says Chevron Shipping Company’s president Mark Ross.
