Through this collaboration, Danish investment firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) aims to develop a range of ammonia-fuelled vessels, from smaller to larger capacities. These vessels will support deep-sea ammonia transportation and ship-to-ship bunkering.
Deployment locations for these vessels have not yet been specified by CIP.
“Our objective is to facilitate the green transportation of clean ammonia by utilising the cargo as fuel,” said Niels H. Lindegaard, CIP’s senior business advisor.
CIP and Færder Tanker plan to develop a 50,000-cbm capacity ammonia carrier designed for ship-to-ship bunkering, with the first vessel expected to be delivered in the second half of 2028.
It has also teamed up with BW Epic Kosan to develop smaller ammonia carriers fitted with dual-fuel ammonia engines for bunkering. BW Epic Kosan will time-charter several of these carriers, though deployment timelines remain unspecified.
Additionally, CIP is in advanced discussions with other shipping firms to develop larger ammonia carriers.
