According to ClassNK, fuel supply system design has been developed for oil tankers and container ships.
Green ammonia is produced from renewable hydrogen and nitrogen and has near-zero emission potential. It is widely regarded as one of the most promising long-term options for decarbonising shipping emissions at scale.
A number of companies have already placed orders for ammonia-fuelled container ships or received class approvals for larger vessel blueprints. Several marine engine manufacturers are developing ammonia-powered engines, and the first ship engine is expected to enter into operation next year.
However, ClassNK points out that it is “imperative” to take adequate safety precautions as ammonia is toxic to humans and corrosive to materials.
ClassNK's fuel supply system design approval is a display of SHI's readiness to meet the shipping industry's upcoming ammonia demand, said Dong-Joo Kim, SHI's head of shipbuilding sales engineering.
