Japanese classification society ClassNK has given approval in principle (AiP) to a parcel layout concept for a hydrogen-fuelled multipurpose vessel.

This is the first AiP certification issued to a ship concept with a large low-speed two-stroke hydrogen-powered main propulsion engine, ClassNK claims.

The AiP covers the proposed layout of the liquified hydrogen fuel tank and other onboard hydrogen-related equipment and the design concept.

The vessel is a joint effort of a Japanese consortium led by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL). The vessel will be built by Onomichi Dockyard and owned by MOL.

The consortium aims to conduct two-year demonstration runs of the vessel from 2027. Before the demo, the Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG), one of the project’s collaborators, will install a large low-speed two-stroke hydrogen-fuelled engine. Kawasaki, which is also part of the project, will install its hydrogen fuel systems in the vessel by 2026.

The classification firm will further contribute to the project for the demo operation from a safety evaluation perspective.
