The Clean Hydrogen Partnership is a public-private undertaking that supports research, development and deployment of hydrogen technologies across the EU. It will fund so-called Hydrogen Valley projects with a combined €105.4 million ($115 million).
Two of the projects aim to produce at least 5,000 mt/year of hydrogen each, and establish a network with other production sites and end-user outlets.
The first project will be spread across Croatia, Slovenia and northern Italy's autonomous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. It will cover the entire green hydrogen value chain, from production to storage and distribution.
The second project aims to develop a green hydrogen corridor across Baltic Sea countries, including Estonia and Finland.
The partners on these two projects have sought funding of €25 million ($27 million) each.
The Clean Hydrogen Partnership has also started grant preparations for seven smaller-scale Hydrogen Valley projects, which target green hydrogen production of at least 500 mt/year each. These projects will be spread across Bulgaria, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Turkey and Luxembourg. Each of the seven projects will be granted €8 million ($8.6 million) in funding from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership.
All these projects will now start negotiations for their grant agreements, which are expected to be completed before the summer.
The European Commission says it will prioritise Hydrogen Valley projects to scale European green hydrogen production and develop an interconnected supply chain.
Last year, the European Commission allocated €200 million ($217 million) in funding to the Clean Hydrogen Partnership through its REPowerEU, which sets out to rapidly reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels and fast forward the green transition".
