WinGD ammonia engine orderbook crosses 30 units

Ammonia dual-fuel engine orders have surpassed 30 units across multiple vessel segments, including tankers, bulk carriers and container ships, engine maker Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) said.

“This latest milestone reflects continued global investment in ammonia propulsion technology, with early projects demonstrating its growing viability across key shipping segments,” the company added.

The engine, which is being built by Yuchai Marine Power, recently completed a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), demonstrating that it can operate on ammonia under controlled conditions at the manufacturing facility.

The FAT is a key validation step before the engine is delivered to the shipyard for onboard installation.

The engine will be installed on the first of four gas carriers being built for Chinese shipowner Tianjin Southwest Maritime at CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding in China.

Earlier testing showed the engine achieved a 5% pilot fuel ratio during full-load operation at maximum rated power output. The test assessed engine performance, fuel efficiency, emissions and durability under peak operating conditions.

A successful 5% pilot fuel ratio indicates the engine can operate on around 95% ammonia fuel. If powered by green ammonia, the engine could significantly reduce emissions compared with conventional marine fuels.
