The 13,000 TEU containership, CMA CGM Paraty, can run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and conventional marine fuels.

The vessel is also methanol-ready, which means that it will not be capable of running on methanol upon delivery, but it will have the option to be retrofitted for methanol propulsion in the future.

It is “biomethane and e-methane ready,” CMA CGM claims.

The vessel is part of CMA CGM’s LNG dual-fuel containership order with Chinese shipbuilding conglomerate China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) in April 2021. The order comprised six 13,000 TEU and six 15,000 TEU container ships.

Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard is a subsidiary of CSSC.

CMA CGM took delivery of another 13,000 TEU containership, CMA CGM Belem, in January.

LNG has been gaining popularity among shipowners. The global LNG-fuelled fleet is currently made up of 520 vessels, with another 195 expected to join this year, classification society DNV data shows.

LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a greenhouse gas (GHG) compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
