Although the immediate impact that these small-scale electric vessels will have on global greenhouse gas emissions might be limited, the contract holds significance as it provides crucial technical and operational insights that can inform the development of larger-scale electric vessels in the future.

Under the deal, the Ro-Ro and dry cargo transportation ferry will be outfitted with 2,400-kilowatt hour (kWh) of EST-Floattech’s battery system. This system will be divided into two separate battery setups onboard, serving to power a range of equipment and facilitate fully electric sailing. Initially, it will undergo a trial run in the Shetland Isles, Scotland, operating between West Burrafirth and Papa Stour.

Additionally, EST-Floattech will provide a 1,200-kWh battery system, which will facilitate the charging of Coastal Workboats’ vessel and can also serve as a range extender when placed onboard. A range extender is an additional component that helps to enhance the distance a vehicle can travel between refueling or recharging.

The project has received funding from the UK Government under its multi-year Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC) programme, which aims to develop the necessary technology to reduce carbon emissions in the UK's domestic maritime sector.
