Tugboats assist larger vessels by towing or pushing them in harbours, rivers and canals.

Although this single vessel will have only a small direct impact on global emissions, the project represents a significant step toward decarbonising port operations. It will also generate crucial technical and operational insights that could guide the future design of larger electric ships.

Currently under construction at Keihin Dock in Japan, the tugboat will be equipped with Corvus Energy’s battery system, providing a total capacity of 2,712 kilowatt-hours (kWh).

The system will be supplied in partnership with Sumisho Marine, with delivery set for June 2026. The vessel is expected to enter service by the end of 2026 under Naikai Tug Boat Service, a subsidiary of the NYK Group.
