COSCO Shipping's container ship COSCO Taurus, equipped with shore power connections, was plugged into shore power for the first time. This was part of a trial at Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) -operated Tollerort container terminal at the Port of Hamburg.
“Like its sister ships, COSCO SHIPPING Taurus is equipped with the electrotechnical components and cables to take in the electricity supplied from the shore – from renewable sources,” the Hamburg Port Authority said.
Shore power will help ships significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions while at berth, it added.
Hamburg Port Authority will conduct more tests to ensure the shore power station at Tollerort is ready to power container ships. In addition, shore power connections will be established at HHLA's Burchardkai and Altenwerder container terminals.
