CSL and Adbri join forces to develop hybrid diesel-electric vessel

December 25, 2023

Canadian shipping company CSL has inked a deal with Australian cement manufacturer Adelaide Brighton Cement (Adbri) to build and operate a self-unloading vessel integrated with a hybrid diesel and battery system.

The ship will support Adbri’s limestone operations in South Australia by replacing its existing fossil-fuelled vessel, Accolade II.

The companies expect the ship will be able to reduce diesel consumption by at least 25% by using electric power, which is anticipated to lower Scope 1 emissions by 40% compared to Accolade II, according to CSL president and chief executive Louis Martel.

Scope 1 emissions of a vessel refer to the direct greenhouse gas emissions emitted during the ship's activities and operations.

Both companies expect to run the vessel entirely on electric power by 2031, Martel adds.

The 11,000-dwt vessel plans to use both shore power and batteries for half of its energy needs, with the goal of becoming 100% electric in the future.

The construction of the vessel is expected to commence in 2024, with delivery expected for 2026.
