The B100, or pure biofuel, derived from plant waste will be supplied by Canada-based Clean Fuels.

Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) said that its bulk carrier, CSL Welland, is already running on B100. Additionally, the company plans to use B100 in seven other vessels, including CSL Laurentien, Baie Comeau, Rt. Hon Paul J. Martin, Spruceglen, CSL St-Laurent, CSL Assiniboine, and Whitefish Bay.

The company has not revealed the specific quantity of B100 they plan to purchase or confirmed if these ships will operate exclusively on B100.

Since 2019, CSL has been integrating biofuel into its marine fuel mix, particularly across its fleet operating in the Great Lakes.

“In 2023, our biofuel fleet set a new record by using 16,400 mt of B100 biodiesel in a single season, marking our highest consumption to date,” the company said last December.
