Since 2020, more than 3,800 vessels have visited the anchorage zone, staying for at least six hours, resulting in an average of 66,000 mt of emissions annually, Stillstrom said.

With this collaboration, Stillstrom and the port’s authority aim to “address the pressing need for decarbonisation,” in one of the busiest anchorage zones in Northern Europe, it said.

Shore power has gradually become more widely available in ports. Although it may not drastically impact global shipping emissions, it allows ships to connect to electrical power while in port, thereby reducing shipping emissions around the port area.

It also cuts down on noise pollution in port areas caused by heavy machinery and generators.

“The partnership between the Port of Skagen and Stillstrom represents a significant step towards decarbonising the anchorage zone and reducing emissions near the coast and city,” said Willy Bent Hansen, managing director of the Port of Skagen.
