DNV grants approval to NoGAPS' ammonia-powered gas carrier design
Classification society DNV has granted approval in principle (AiP) to an ammonia-powered gas carrier, designed by the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) along with Nordic Green Ammonia Powered Ships (NoGAPS) partnership.

Ammonia has become one of the most popular alternative fuels being tested for use in the shipping industry to meet the International Maritime Organization's decarbonisation targets.
DNV's review of the project focused on the arrangement and systems onboard related to the cargo and fuel installation, it said in a statement. It has been designed jointly by MMMCZCS and Global Maritime Forum's (GMF) NoGAPS consortium.
GMF brought together the NoGAPS partnership in 2020 to build the concept for an ammonia-powered gas carrier that can transport ammonia as cargo in Northern Europe while using ammonia as fuel.
NoGAPS includes gas carrier operator BW Epic Kosan, chemical company Yara, ship designer Breeze Ship Design, and engine makers MAN Energy Solutions and Wärtsilä.
An AiP is granted at an early conceptual design phase to indicate project feasibility, but it does not guarantee that the project will be completed.
