Classification society DNV has issued a “type approval design certificate” for an automated rigid sail propulsion system developed by French marine startup OceanWings.

The certificate confirms the design’s safety, reliability and operational capability under DNV’s technical and regulatory standards in both “tiltable and fixed configurations,” OceanWings said.

The foldable wing-sail system can allow larger vessels to pass under bridges and access port infrastructure without constraints. It is intended for oil, gas and chemical tankers, bulk carriers and ROPAX vessels, and can be retrofitted to existing ships or installed on newbuilds.

OceanWings estimates a 25-year lifespan for the system and projects average fuel savings of 1.3 mt/day, according to its website, claiming it can achieve “double-digit fuel and emission reductions” on long voyages.

The company has described the sail as a “ready-now” wind-assisted propulsion system that can support compliance with FuelEU Maritime and the IMO’s planned Global Fuel Standard.
