The 22,500-dwt tanker will be equipped with a dual-fuel engine that can run on LNG and conventional marine fuels.
The vessel will also be equipped with a 500-kilowatt hour (kWh) battery pack for additional power, shore power connection and a waste heat recovery system. The system will utilise waste heat from the main engine to generate additional power, thereby improving the vessel's fuel efficiency.
The new tanker will be capable of transporting various kinds of cargoes such as biofuels, and animal fats, Donsötank claims. It is scheduled for delivery in mid-2027.
It will be the fifth ship from Wuhu Shipyard, joining M/T Prospero, M/T Pacifico, and the two other vessels currently under construction.
LNG has been gaining popularity among shipowners. The global LNG-fuelled fleet is currently made up of 557 vessels, with another 160 expected to join this year, classification society DNV data shows.
LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a greenhouse gas (GHG) compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
