Econowind to install WAPS on a Boomsma Shipping vessel

Dutch wind power firm Econowind plans to install a 30-metre suction wing system on a vessel operated by Boomsma Shipping later this year.

The system uses boundary-layer suction technology to harness wind power and generate extra thrust, reducing the load on the ship’s main engine and lowering fuel consumption, according to Econowind.

Further details—such as the vessel name and installation location—have not yet been disclosed.

After seeing strong adoption in shortsea and regional trades, Econowind is now targeting larger vessels and long-haul routes, where wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) can deliver greater fuel savings. To support this expansion into deepsea shipping, the company is also setting up production in the Far East, closer to major shipbuilding hubs.

Interest in wind-assisted propulsion continues to grow as shipowners look to improve efficiency and cut emissions.

Earlier this month, HGK Shipping, part of German shipping and logistic group HGK, entered into an agreement with Econowind to install WAPS on its coastal vessel Amadeus Titanium.
