Ecospray, a part of British-American cruise operator Carnival Corporation, claims that its technology enables the capture of up to 80% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted during ship operation.

The technology, which was trialed at sea in 2023, works by using an amine solution to absorb the CO2. It then uses leftover heat from the vessel's engine to release and collect the CO2, making use of energy that would otherwise go waste, Ecospray adds.

“This approach not only delivers substantial energy savings compared to traditional high-temperature methods, but also simplifies onboard integration and significantly lowers operational costs,” the company says.

Maritime industry advancing with CCS

The shipping industry is promoting carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to reduce the sector's carbon footprint and effectively meet global emissions reduction goals.

Classification society DNV says that CCS allows ships to use fossil-based fuels while significantly reducing emissions. This can ease the burden of producing green and blue fuels, like e-methanol or blue ammonia, to meet shipping demand.

Several shipping companies are exploring ways to integrate the technology onboard vessels.
