The project aims to “boost local production of green ammonia, reinforcing Egypt’s ambition to become a regional hub for green hydrogen,” according to the report. It will also “provide green fuel” to vessels transiting the Suez Canal, as well as to global markets.

Green ammonia is produced by combining green hydrogen with airborne nitrogen through the Haber-Bosch process. In this method, both hydrogen generation and the Haber-Bosch process are theoretically powered by renewable electricity, resulting in no carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and positioning green ammonia as a promising clean fuel for a sustainable future.

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli has reviewed the project. However, the timeline for the project has not yet been disclosed.
